Tips on Making Holiday Cottage Style Bedroom

Do you just love the feel of the cozy holiday cottage style bedroom that you stayed in during your vacation? What made that room so special? Possibly it was the nooks and crannies that shaped the bedroom, plus grandma's well-worn pastel floral quilt. The room was probably simply furnished and a comfy throw rug was the first thing your feet touched when the sunshine woke you up in the morning.

If you've always wished you could have that comfy room in your house, whether it be your master bedroom or a guest bedroom, this is the time to move forward on your wish. Your room may be an exact rectangle in an otherwise contemporary home. With a little thought, planning, asking around or shopping and then putting it all together, you will enjoy the cottage bedroom look you've dreamed of.

Most cottage style bedrooms come together with soft pastels and sort of a shabby chic look. Vintage accessories pull them together. The following tips enable you to achieve that holiday cottage look you've dreamed of.

Bed Cover. Because the bed cover will be a great part of the room, it should tell the story of the room. Pastels of mint green, yellows, pinks or blue showered in a floral print could be the beginning of your plan.

Sheet and Pillow Cases. Add sheet and pillow cases to show off your bed cover. You may want subtle stripes or a small floral in blending colors or it would be fun to have a solid color to show off your lovely vintage print.

Throw Pillows. A simple throw pillow at the foot of the bed can add comfort to your room. Just pull up the throw pillow for a quick afternoon nap or as a cover up while reading your favorite book or magazine.

Furniture. You're into a calming look, so furniture should be simple. However, a vintage style bed and dresser would dress up the room. White furniture always looks great in a cottage bedroom as it accents the cozy, friendly pastels.

Rugs. Area or throw rugs should blend. Rag rugs fit the style, but be sure to put a mat underneath the rug to prevent sliding and slipping. Floral rugs, with soft pastel colors, can also be very appropriate and calming.

Personal Stuff. The bedside look is extremely important. Books, magazines, old clocks and photos work especially well in a cottage bedroom. Group things into a basket or place three smaller framed photos together.

Collection Items. Collections can make your bedroom very personal. Shells from the seashore you visited, or hat pins, or old jewelry in a frame help you to feel the warm feelings as you enter your cottage style room.

Flowers. Fresh flowers are always welcome and top off a cottage style room. A good substitute is a lovely bouquet of silk floral that bring out those lovely warm pastels.

Lighting. Lighting is very important. Include lamps with pastel or light floral shades. Don't use lamps that are too large or too contemporary. Locate them so they are easily reached for reading or spending time in your special cottage style bedroom.

Wall Color. Walls are best if painted pastel colors to bring out the beauty of your bed cover and other pieces of your room. However, if your furniture is dark, white walls can be very helpful in adding some brightness and cleverly adding to the dimension of the pastel colors. Whether you've chosen all floral, floral and stripes and other comfy additions, you will love the look of this very lovely holiday cottage style bedroom.
