It’s time to
get those brave pants on and do something crazy, and there’s no better place to
do it than in New Zealand. The world’s
adventure capital will have you screaming with delight (or abject terror), and,
if you’re not an adrenaline junkie already, you sure will become one. As
someone wise once said about the adventure sports in this land of plenty, “It’s
the most fun you’ll ever have with your clothes on.” Here are some basic tips
for you to travel this place without fuss.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The summer high
season on North Island is from November to April. From December to March, though,
there are a bunch of concerts and events held around the island to keep you entertained.
GETTING THERE
You can fly in
to either Auckland or Wellington, but flights to Auckland are more frequent.
Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Malaysia Airlines, Thai
Airways and Emirates fly to New Zealand from major Indian cities.
GETTING AROUND
Inter-city travel
is a piece of cake, with a bunch of different train and bus services. Go the scenic
way with the Northern Explorer Train, which runs from Auckland to Wellington on
a six-day time table. You can go straight to Wellington, or add stop-overs in various
regions. Naked bus is also a great way to travel. It offers cheap transport across
the North Island and there’s also free wi-fi on board. Decide on your pick-up and
drop-off points and you’re good to go. Inter city has flexible passes, giving you
the freedom to explore with hour-based passes.
WHERE TO STAY
Taupo: Wairakei Resort Taupo is like a resort times ten. This whopper of
a property has a fully-equipped gym, day spa and even a nine-hole golf course.
There are also two swimming pools, a squash court, sauna and spa pools and
mountain-bike tracks around the property. Who said size doesn’t matter?
Wellington: Copthorne Hotel Wellington Oriental Bay has excellent waterfront
views of Wellington’s famous harbor. The hotel is close to the CBD and a short
walk away from just about everything.
Auckland: Simplicity is the key word at Mercure Hotel Auckland. The
amenities are basic, but it’s centrally located and is a great base. The
restaurant on the top floor offers sprawling views of the Waitemata Harbor.
Rotorua: Though a tad removed from the city-center, the Distinction Hotel
has a quiet feel to it that’s very relaxing. Here’s an insider tip: make sure
you hunt down the hotel’s private spa pools and have some fun in the bubbling
waters.
Napier, Hawke’s Bay: Napier is all about the Art Deco, and the
Masonic Hotel is an Art Deco institution. Right in the heart of the city and,
the hotel offers great sea views and is a nice change from the normal stay
options.
